School Lunches

Are school lunches to unhealthy? I think so here is some facts of school lunches and how unhealthy they can be for your children. A national study came out showing that 16% of children 6-11 are obese. That is double what it was in 1980. Another study came out saying that 60% of the students who eat school lunches on a regular basis will grow up to be obese. There is all these stats and still nothing is being changed. Why not change the rules because they are clearly wrong. According to the rules some schools have to follow french fries count as a vegetable. Yes it is true according to the people feeding your children it is the same to feed the fried, greasy, and salty french fries are the same as given them a fresh salad. If that isn’t wrong then I don’t think I know what is. This whole thing needs to be stopped. Students are developing the patterns that will lead to a short life. Do you as parents want your children's life to be shorten because of our schools lunches? Well there is parents of 55 million kids who get school lunch that may have to live with it. School lunches included French fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, bagged chips, chocolate milk. All of these foods are high in fat, sugar, and sodium. Why not make all of these lunches healthier and save 55 million kids. Go to Jamie Oliver petition to make a change in school lunches. References: Diigo

1:1 Computers

What has been the effect of having a 1:1 ratio of computers? Having a 1:1 ratio of computers have been great. I have learn so much about technology and the way it works that I would have never known. Classes have become more fun because of them and the teachers seem to be more excited about teaching us then ever. For example I have a teacher who made a social networking site so we could have discussions over the computer about the books we have read in class. It brings a new twist to every day life that I love. It also makes are projects cooling and makes making a great project easier because we have this resource. I also like the fact that more jobs and college will want me because of the experience I have with technology. I won't just be another high school kid wanting to go to a college I will be a high school student with 5 years of background with technology. What college wouldn't want that over any other kid. The laptops have brought so many opportunities to my school and me that I wouldn't give the laptops away for they world. They are motivation me in way that I have never been before. I am always excited for the next day at school and i use to never say that. The honest to god truth is that if it wasn't for the laptops I would feel like school is just a giant waste of mine and everyone else time but not any more thanks to the laptops.

The Arts

Should schools be taking away the arts? Well I don't think so. Yes schools are having more and more budget cuts today and yes I know people think it is more important to learn stuff like science and math but we need the arts. America wouldn't be the great country it is today if it wasn't for the arts. As Americans we are they inventors. They one who use are imagination to make great inventions. If we cut out the art we would be taken away the one thing that makes this country great. I places like China ,where schools only teach their students math and science, they envy us. China today yes still has a lot of the ancient Chinese traditions but the want to be more like are culture because they love the freedom and creativity we have. If we take away the art we will soon see that we will be envying another country for their creativity. Why should we take away the things that make America great. We should be encouraging kids to be more creative not taken away what may be their only chance to find their true passion and life. It may take a little bit of money form the science and math programs but it will all be worth it when one of those kids uses there imagination and thinks out side of the box to find a cure to cancer or any type of disease for that matter and why should we stop them.

Semester Test

Are semester test to old school for today's fast pace world? Even though some teacher feel we should do project or nothing at all for semester test I feel that we still need them. They are a great way to prove that the students adsorbed what they learned and not just that they learned it for the a long enough time to pass chapter test. If we do project yes you can cover some of what you learn over the semester in the project but you cannot even come close to cover all the information. With project all they have to do is prove they know enough to make a project not all of the information that they should know. Doing project are fun and a great way to teach students new material I just feel that it is not the best way to have the student recall what they have learned. I feel if we test students that they will remember the information longer the if the just make a project on it on it.

Classes over computers

Should schools give the option of having classes over the computer? I don't think that school should have normal classes online. The reason I think this is because some kids can't learn that way. Some students learn by class discussion and the computers sometimes a restrict how far the discussion can go. Also I feel as if it won't be as personal. There would be no interaction with the other students. In addition to students will not feel emotional invested in the work the are doing. I feel as if the students will fell unconnected to ever thing they are learning. Although I think that it would be fine to offer advanced classes online so students could stay at the same school with all their friends but at the same time the are getting the education the need. So in conclusion we should keep student emotional involved with what they are learning but at the same time the are getting the education they need.

Snow Days

How should schools make up snow days? I think that schools should no longer take away days from break. I think that we should add a hour to the end of the school day and if you do that about five times it would make up a missed day. The reason I think this way would be better is because it would be more convent then having to come in another day. I mean think about it you are already at school why not just stay and extra hour. It would also leave more time to get stuff that we didn't get to do on the snow days done.
People where thinking about have students come in on Saturdays to make up snow days. I didn't like this idea at all. The reason I don't like it is because people have stuff like sports tournaments over the weekend. We can't just drop everything at a minutes notice just to come to school. That's another reason that I like the idea of stay an extra hour for school. You were already planing on being at school that day.

How long should school years be?

Should school years stay the same or should they be year long? I think that schools should be year long. I think this because over the summer kids loose so much of what they learn the past year over summer. If we had year round school there would be breaks but none of them would be long enough that you would forget what you learned.
Another thing is that most kids think that having year round school would take away there vacation time but really ,in my opinion, we would have better breaks. If we have year round school we would have breaks more often. Most schools go with the 45-15 plan. This is where for every 45 day you are in school you get 15 days off. You would also still have built in breaks for the holiday. I would much rather have breaks more often then on long break in the summer.
